May 22th, 2008: Collyer, KS

This was the best chase day of 2008 for me. Shawn H, Joel L, Ross B, Ron B, and myself started the day in Colby. Around 5:15 PM we saw a skiny rope tornado near Grainfield, KS. We were stuck in the rain for a while and only had a minute or two to take pictures and video once we got out of it. About an hour later around 6:20 just a bit down I-70 at Voda Road, we witnessed a very large dusty wall cloud cross the interstate. The wind flowing into this was at least 30 MPH. While there didn't appear to be a tornado at any point, it was the coolest thing of the whole trip.

Video Summary, including the dusty meso and the tornado:

Tornado near Grainfield. My video camera wasn't recording. :(

Between Collyer and Waukeene on I-70. Lightning flash under the dusty meso, showing it wasn't on the ground.

Wacthing the meso go by and out of reach on gravel roads.
